Botox as a CrossFitter: The Do's and Don'ts

Are you considering injectables but aren’t quite sure? Here are a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to injectables (Botox, Dysport, etc)  Botulinum toxin type A is an injectable neurotoxin, better known under brand names such as Botox Cosmetic®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®

The vibe around Botox for me is positive.  However, there is also a healthy dose of skepticism and ongoing discussions about the importance of moderation, safety, and the broader implications of cosmetic procedures. I wanted to share my personal experiences and perspectives, but it’s crucial to do thorough research and consult with qualified professionals when considering Botox.  I have done injectables for over a decade now and am so happy with this choice.  I originally started treatments to help treat ocular migraines as I am very light-sensitive. Now I continue for that plus the benefits of Botox.  I want to offer full transparency to help normalize the procedure, reduce stigma, and offer some tips for anyone interested
For the article, I use the term Botox instead of listing them all out each time.

Do: Consult with Professionals

Before diving in, speak to a qualified medical practitioner about Botox to understand the procedure, potential side effects, and any restrictions. Schedule a consultation to discuss your goals, ask questions, and understand the procedure. A reputable provider will assess your medical history, explain the risks and benefits, and provide realistic expectations. Check their credentials and read reviews or testimonials from previous patients. During your consultation, discuss your fitness routine and any specific concerns. A knowledgeable provider will tailor the treatment to your needs, taking into account the muscle activity associated with CrossFit.
(For me personally, I have found that getting a few more units, since I am very active, has helped give me the look I am going for. I also prefer Dysport over Botox as it sets in faster and lasts longer)

Don't: Overexert Yourself Post-Botox

Following a Botox treatment, it's crucial to avoid intense physical activity for at least 24 hours. Sweating excessively or engaging in strenuous workouts can potentially disperse the injected Botox, affecting its efficacy. Give yourself time to heal and allow the treatment to settle before hitting the CrossFit box with full intensity. (I plan to hit my workout the morning of my Botox appt, then rest the next day, then hit an afternoon workout that following day)

Don't: Forget About Hydration

Botox can be dehydrating. Proper hydration supports overall health, aids muscle recovery, and contributes to the longevity of Botox results. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain healthy skin and can aid in the recovery process.

Do: Listen to Your Body

After a Botox treatment, pay close attention to your body's signals during your workouts. If you experience discomfort, pain, or unusual sensations, it's crucial to communicate with your healthcare provider. Adjust your workout intensity as needed, and don't push yourself to the point of potential harm.

Don't: Neglect Skincare

Integrate skincare into your routine, especially post-Botox. Protect your skin from the sun, as UV exposure can accelerate the breakdown of Botox. Use a high-SPF sunscreen and consider wearing a hat during outdoor workouts.

Do: Enjoy the Synergy

Feeling good inside and out can boost confidence and motivation, enhancing your overall fitness journey.

As an average lady who likes to CrossFit and get Botox, I hope this article helped outline a few do’s and don’ts. I wanted to bring you a balance between self-care, caution, and awareness.
