Metabolism Myths You Can Kick to the Curb
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard women say “Once I hit my 40’s everything just changed for me and I started gaining weight!”
While it may be true, it’s probably not happening for the reasons you think…
3 Myths About Your Metabolism That You Can Kick To the Curb:
Myth: Eating Late at Night Slows Metabolism:
The idea that eating late at night slows down your metabolism is a common myth we hear all the time. While it’s true that the body’s metabolic rate naturally decreases during sleep, the overall impact of when you eat is more about total daily caloric intake and expenditure rather than the specific time of day. While your metabolism doesn’t necessarily suffer, eating late at night is likely impacting your gut and hormone health more!
Myth: Fad Diets Boost Metabolism:
Fad diets, AKA extremely low-calorie intake, are often believed to “shock” the metabolism into working faster. However, this approach can lead to muscle loss and a reduction in metabolic rate as the body adapts to conserve energy. Fad diets or diets that starve you are actually causing more harm than good to your metabolism!
Myth: Metabolism Slows Down Significantly with Age:
While it’s true that metabolic rate tends to decrease with age, the decline is often overestimated. The primary reason for weight gain as people age is often a decrease in physical activity and muscle mass rather than a drastic slowdown in metabolism. Regular exercise and maintaining muscle mass can help mitigate age-related changes in metabolic rate.
Let’s bust #3 even more… Did you know that throughout your life, your metabolism only has four phases?!
Your first year of life is phase 1 of metabolism: During pregnancy, the metabolism is similar to moms’, then throughout the first year of life, it climbs to a peak that is 50% higher than the metabolism of a full-grown adult!
Age 1-20 is the second phase: Your metabolism steadily decreases from earlier heightened levels throughout adolescence and finally levels out during adulthood. Despite the raging appetite and growth spurts, teens’ metabolism is on the decline.
Age 20-60 is the phase 3 and the adult phase of your metabolism. It is rock solid for these 40 years throughout the working years of your life. It doesn’t change before or after pregnancy, nor does it decline after menopause.
Phase 4: After 60 metabolism does decline, but it’s at a very slow rate: .7 percent/year is all.
So what’s the deal? If your metabolism isn’t the enemy, how do you lose weight and regain your happiest and healthiest self?
